The Maui Invitational matchups are set to be released later today.

But CBSSports.com already has them for you.

According to a source, the matchups are:
  • Duke vs. Tennessee
  • Memphis vs. Michigan
  • Kansas vs. Georgetown
  • UCLA vs. Chaminade
The Duke-Tennessee winner will play the Memphis-Michigan winner in one semifinal while the Kansas-Georgetown winner plays the UCLA-Chaminade winner in the other semifinal. Five of the eight Maui participants are ranked in the latest version of the CBSSports.com Top 25 (and one). The group is led by No. 6 Duke and followed by No. 8 Memphis, No. 11 Kansas, No. 20 Michigan and No. 25 UCLA. So the bracket appears a little unbalanced provided you believe in those rankings. Seeded roperly, the bracket should look more like this:
  • Duke-Chaminade
  • Michigan-UCLA
  • Kansas-Georgetown
  • Memphis-Tennessee
The problem with that more accurately seeded bracket is that Duke refuses to play non-Division I opponents (like Chaminade), and tournament officials, a source said, wanted Duke on the opposite side of Kansas and UCLA in order to give the event a chance at a Duke-UCLA or Duke-Kansas championship game. In other words, Kansas, UCLA and Chaminade had to be on the opposite side of Duke. The unbalanced bracket is the byproduct.

The losers in all this?

Memphis and Michigan.

One of those top-20 teams is starting 0-1 in Maui.

Barefootserpent what are you talking about
Duke has played the defending champs in division 2 the last 2 years and are playing the division 2 champs this year as well.

Maui Invite: Uppity Duke

"Duke refuses to play non-Division I opponents (like Chaminade)... Oh, of course they do. That's just Krzyzewski being uppity. Dork couldn't stand the embarrassment of possibly losing to a non-Division 1 opponent. Some things never change.

So, Dana O'Neil has moved up to pontificating, now? LOL Well, let's just hope hers don't become the new Seth Davis variety! I remember in 2008, when he picked against us in every NCAA tournament matchup until the final, when he picked us over Kansas!

Whats up MTB! I somehow lost my ID here and had to re-sign up. Oh well "Here today Gone to Maui." Looks like the only good early season tourney is the Maui. I think we will see more than 1/2 these teams making good runs later in the big dance. So many question for so many of these teams to answer. Duke lost Irving. Singler and Smith but add Rivers to some decent role player(Curry, Dawkins & the Plumlees). Kansas is in the same boat with the loss of the Morris twins, Morningstar and Shelby(not a big loss IMHO) but they have Robinson. He avg about 14 min and 6.4 rbs. If he steps up his game it will give KU a force under the basket. Migh lost a great asst guard (6.7) and point maker (15) with Morris, but I think they will really want to beat Mphs so they can get a little payback from Duke who beat them in the big dance by 2. The Wear Twins bailed on UNC and will be with UCLA now and they're Micky D All-Americans and Gtwn adds Porter, Hopkins and Trawick. depending on how fast these newbies jell both could be a hard out. If the Tigers start out like they played in March and additions Thomas and Simpson jell quickly Dana O'Neil (ESPN) perdition of the Tigers as the Maui Champs will be accurate. All in all a heck of a field. Let the Games begin!!! Go Tigers!

I can't blame Duke for not wanting to play Chaminade, the way the RPI works it could drag them down even if they won by a hundred points. It could be the difference between getting the top number one seed at the tourney or something less. Plus that darn Chaminade has pulled a few upsets on the big boys in this tourney. Go Tarheels.

Duke is afraid of Chaminade

Duke knows they have all to lose and nothing to gain by playing Chaminade.  They don't want to be an NCAA poster child for upsets.  As for Michgan, they could be a better team than last year and go 0-3.  Memphis still has the horses to win one or two, but this is a tough field.

What's up, krsp. So, you're an "amateur" on here, huh? LOL Oh yeah, I forgot -- that was that "other" website you've been hanging out on with the rest of us Tiger fans for years. Glad to see you're expanding your sports network horizons=]  - MTB on that other site.

Yep, I think the Memphis/Michigan game will be a tight one, in more ways than one. Lots of early season jitters, two really good backcourts, and maybe what Chris Crawford said about one of our opponents from last year -- "We could see their little @$$#@!%$ tightening up." Should be fun! Can't wait. Come on, basketball season!!!!!!!!!!!!

Figures That Mphs/Mich would draw the short straws because Duke won't play the host! Kinda like showing up for a brithday party and refusing to bring a gift. I hope Duke and Chaminade both win thier first game and lose thier second so they can meet anyway!!!!
