Shane Larkin left DePaul a couple weeks ago, saying he had a “medical condition that required him to be closer to his Orlando home.”

The talented freshman, who had a legitimate shot to crack the starting lineup for Oliver Purnell this season, has decided to transfer to Miami – sources told CBSSports.com.

The 5-foot-11 Larkin is the son of former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin and could have started alongside Brandon Young in Purnell’s backcourt.

Now he’ll be just a few hours from home and the beneficiary of his mystery medical condition is new Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga.

Larkin already spent part of the summer in classes at DePaul, so it’s likely he’ll have to sit out this season. However, expect him and Miami to appeal the NCAA in hopes he would be eligible this season.

Sources told CBSSports.com that Larkin participated in the majority of DePaul’s 10 practices that led up to the team’s current trip overseas – and he also passed a physical in mid-June.

Whether he is eligible this season or next, this is a nice addition for Larranaga – who will lose senior guard Malcolm Grant after this season and could wind up losing junior Durand Scott as well.

A medical condition that requires you to be close to home?  Is his mom a world renowned specialist in a particular medical field?  If the medical condition was so severe, how could this kid play Division One basketball?  No one knew of this condition until now?  It never factored in his decision making all this time?    What a joke.  I assure you that any medical treatment that you can get in Miami, you can get in Chicago.  College sports is beyond ridiculous.  They punish some kids for stuff that seems trivial to everyone, but allow others to game the system anytime they see fit.  It's a sad state of affairs.

I'll bet Larkin puts the brakes on this transfer pretty fast.  Nobody in his right mind would transfer into Miami right now.  USF will take him, though.  They always have a lot of transfers.

So he has to be closer to home but he still chooses a school 4 hours away from home. Sure it's a heck of a lot closer to orlando than chicogo is, but do we really beleive he's going to be driving 4 hours all the time to go home. I'm sorry but in my mind with these waivers if you're moving home to be close to someone sick or are sick yourself in this case and need to be near home then you need to actually be near your home. If he really needs to be near home transfer to UCF. Kids are abusing these rules.
